Iām always online. Iām probably as online as it gets. Iām constantly discovering, noticing, and absorbing things. Whenever I do, I go toward communities that share interests with. I share my thoughts, and in return, I get to see other peopleās thoughts and perspectives. But recently, Iāve noticed a this strange phenomenonāthis idea of artificially curating what you think.
It sounds stupidāhow can you make up what you think? But let me explain what I mean. Thereās this rise in everyone feeling like they have to artifically set up the way that they interpret art.
Hereās an example. I was scrolling on TikTok (as one does) when I came across a this video using the audio: āI think youāre just here for the ziplineā from KUWTK. The caption said: āI feel like youāre just watching this film to log it on Letterboxd.ā
And what really surprised me were the comments. People agreed?? saying things like: āYeah I just want to say Iāve seen the movie before,ā or āLOL, whatever makes my Letterboxd look good.ā
That got me thinking about a few things:
1. Weāve turned apps like Letterboxdāoriginally meant for sharing authentic thoughts about filmsāinto an app for funny one-liners and validation.
2. People care more about presentation and perception of āaestheticnessā than the actual experience of engaging with art.
And seriously I think this absolutely hurts what art is supposed to stand for.
My idea of apps like Letterboxd, Serialized, and Airbuds are that itās less about someones ability to have a good looking set up and presentstion and more about your actual ability to use your brain and interpret and be concious in what the art means.
But, Iām not saying all art has to have some insane meaning interpretation. But we have to draw a line between sharing authentic opinions and obsessing over the validity or aesthetic of your presentation.
And maybe I could be wrong, and the presentation of something could motivate and encourage people to watch more or listen to more but I think itās insane that people can make up what they think just to make an app look pretty.
Original Ideas???
There is also a big problem in social media thatās just aligning with the most popular opinion or idea for social clout or formity and this isnāt really something new. There are tons of videos that are like oh I thought this was really relatable but then I checked comments and now not so much. I guess when everyone conforms to one idea itās easy for your opinion to be swayed but not when you stand on ts and use your brain!!!!
I think that the preasure (online mainly) to do things like fake an interpretation or comprehension might stem from the influence of others and not wanting to be wrong and the āshameā that comes with not understanding
Art is subjective and can be interpreted in any way but what I am trying to point out here is the lack of interpretations and reflections that we have! Reading, or watching, or listening can morph your understandings and perceptions of life and other art! And can deepen your intentions in thought and yeah!
But what I say doesnāt really matter I sometimes donāt think about the meaning of anything ⦠ever! And I am okay with that I often donāt question things and you shouldnāt either! just vibe! ok byeā¤ļø
